Author Bio

​Brian Ascalon Roley is a professor and award-winning author of multiracial Philippine and American descent and a recent National Endowment of the Arts Literature Fellow. He is currently Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at Miami University.

His books include AMERICAN SON: a novel (W.W. Norton; Christian Bourgeois Editeur), which was a Los Angeles Times Best Book, New York Times Editor’s Choice and Notable Book, Kiriyama Pacific Rim Prize Finalist, Salon.com best of the month, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center Notable Book, and winner of the Association for Asian American Studies Prose Book Award of 2003, among other honors. Brian's work has also been featured in the California Council for the Humanities Statewide Reading Campaign of 2004, and has been widely taught nationally and abroad.

His fiction, literary essays, poetry and hybrid work have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including The Iowa Review, The North American Review, The Asian American Literary Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Times, Mixed: An Anthology of Short Fiction on the Multiracial Experience (W.W. Norton), Charlie Chan is Dead 2: An Anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction (Penguin), and several best selling anthologies in the Philippines.

A collection of short fiction, THE LAST MISTRESS OF JOSE RIZAL and Other Stories, was released by Curbstone / Northwestern University Press, and he received the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in 2018.

Brian has received fellowships, research appointments and residencies from Cornell University, the University of Cambridge, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, Miami University, the Djerassi Foundation, Ragdale, Hambidge, the VCCA San Angelo and Moulin à Nef, Auvillar, France, among others.

A short poetry collection, AMBUSCADE (Finishing Line Press Open Poetry Competition Winner) was released in 2021. More poetry, THE ICE BENEATH THE EARTH (C & R Press Summer Tidepool Chapbook Prize in Poetry) is forthcoming January 29th, 2024.
